The best-selling sports car in the world for the last 50 years, The Ford Mustang needs little introduction after making its iconic debut in 1964 at the World’s Fair. Despite being developed on a shoe-string budget and in record time, the 1965 Mustang was an instant success, selling over 22,000 models on its first day and launching a new genre in the American automotive segment–the pony car. Today, the 2022 Ford Mustang continues that tradition and remains the world’s definitive sports car, a modern marvel on wheels.
Earning high praise from industry experts, the 2022 Mustang is praised for its ability to continue a nearly 60-year tradition with a modern, innovative, and more powerful twist. The 1965 Mustang roared to life with its legendary 271 horsepower engine and gave American drivers their first taste of heart-pounding speed. The 2022 Mustang, unsurprisingly, leaves its family tree in the dust with two exceptional powertrains that deliver anywhere from 310 to 470 horsepower and up to 410 lb-ft of torque for jaw-dropping acceleration that will leave you breathless.
Beyond the 2022 Mustang’s impressive power, the iconic pony car remains an American favorite because of Ford’s ability to meet and exceed the needs and wants of its customers. On the Mustang, this looks like a new lineup of special editions that give you plenty of options to customize the pony car to your needs with packages like the Stealth Edition, Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition, and the Ice White Edition Coupe. Inside, the Mustang’s extensive suite of cutting-edge technology, which ranges from connectivity to safety and driver-assist features, carries the Mustang into a new era of modern technology where drivers of all ages can further appreciate everything Ford’s legendary speed demon has to offer.

Levels of Power
The Mustang is built on a legacy of speed, and that remains true for the 2022 Mustang, whose heartbeat is delivered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost or a 5.0-liter V8 engine affectionately dubbed the “Coyote.” The Mustang comes standard with Ford’s tried and true 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that’s mated to either a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission to deliver 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque for exceptional power, acceleration, and handling.
Accepting the challenge to make the EcoBoost even more capable, Ford made a few tweaks to the 2.3-liter with the available High-Performance Package. The addition of a high-tensile liner and high-strength aluminum head to the engine block, as well as updates to the pistons and a reduction in the coolant capacity from 13.6 to 9.5 quarts, increases the engine’s power to 330 horsepower. This translates to a higher top speed of 155 mph compared to the standard EcoBoost at 125 mph.
For those looking for even greater power, Ford delivers big with the GT, Mach 1, and the Shelby GT500. The GT and Mach 1 both come equipped with a 5.0-liter “Coyote” V8 under the hood. On the GT, the Coyote delivers 450 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque to push the Mustang to a top speed of 155 mph. With a few improvements, the Coyote churns out even more horsepower on the Mach 1 to the tune of 470 horses and a top speed of 168 mph.
Unsurprisingly, these numbers are overshadowed by the Shelby GT500 that roars to life courtesy of its 5.2-liter Supercharged V8 engine. Known as the “Predator,” the 5.2-liter delivers anywhere between 760 to 900 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque that pushes the Shelby to a top speed of 180 mph, which is electronically limited due to safety standards. Even so, this legendary power and capability would certainly make the late Carroll Shelby, renowned race car driver and automotive designer, incredibly proud.
Special Editions
Since its debut in 1964, the Mustang has built its reputation not only for its remarkable speed and handling but also for being the people’s pony car. This reputation is courtesy of the Mustang’s many options for customization, a trend that continues in 2022. Ford introduces several new special edition packages to the Mustang’s lineup in 2022 in addition to extending the exterior paint palette with eight new colors: Code Orange, Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat, Atlas Blue Metallic, Brittany Blue Metallic, Dark Matter Gray Metallic, Eruption Green Metallic, Grabber Blue Metallic, and Mischievous Purple Metallic.
The Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition
Ford adds five new special edition packages to the 2022 Mustang starting with a tribute to Carroll Shelby himself with the Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition. The Heritage Edition celebrates the GT500 as the ultimate pony car and pays homage to the original 1967 Shelby GT500 with its exclusive Brittany Blue exterior and racing stripes in either Wimbledon White or Absolute Black. Equipped with the segment’s first 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the GT500 is the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built.
The Ice White, California, and Coastal Editions
Inspired by the 1993 Triple White Fox body Mustang, the Ice White Edition coupe features clear, iced-out taillamps and Oxford White pony badges, fender badging, leather seat inserts, and leather door panels. The California Special Edition is a veteran in the Mustang lineup and celebrates California with exclusive badging, a side stripe trademark, suede-trimmed seats, and signature California Special detailing both inside and out. Following a similar suit is the Coastal Limited Edition that’s designed with a beachy vibe courtesy of its unique side stripes, Coastal detailing, and signature rear fender side scoop.
The Stealth Edition
New for 2022 is the Mustang Stealth Edition, which gives the iconic pony car a menacing appearance. Sitting on 19-inch Ebony Black-painted aluminum wheels, the Stealth Edition adds black pony badges, mirror caps, clear LED taillamp covers, and a performance rear wing. Inside, you’ll find unique detailing from the matte and gloss black instrument panel badge to the lighted sill plate that further distinguishes the Stealth Edition from every other Mustang in the fleet.
Technology
Cool Features in the Coolest Car
Ford equips the 2022 Mustang with an expansive suite of cutting-edge technology that’s designed to keep you connected, informed, and safe when you’re behind the wheel. From the driver’s seat, you’ll find a digital cockpit that gives you all the data you need within view or reach. This is courtesy of the class-exclusive 12-inch configurable digital cluster that’s home to Track Apps, a performance-inspired tool that gives you real-time metrics like acceleration times, lap times, g-forces, and more.
When you’re not pushing the Mustang to its limits, you can easily navigate the road ahead with the voice-activated touchscreen navigation system. Housed on the Mustang’s 8-inch center touchscreen display, the navigation system makes it easy to explore new roads and reach your destination without stealing your focus from what’s ahead, thanks to audible turn-by-turn instructions. Along with the pinch-to-zoom capability that gives you a better view of the map, navigating any road is made even easier with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, which provides real-time traffic updates and weather conditions along with offering alternate routes to ensure you get to your destination safely and on time.
The Mustang’s navigation system is part of Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system that also makes it easy to stay connected and entertained wherever the road takes you. The SYNC 3 system gives you easy access to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration and equips the Mustang with an available WiFi hotspot. When you’re not behind the wheel, you can stay connected to the Mustang via the FordPass Connect app on your smartphone. Through the app, you can remotely start and stop the engine, lock and unlock the doors, schedule remote starts, get vehicle health reports, check the fuel level, and locate the Mustang with the touch of a button.
Beyond keeping you connected, the Mustang’s cutting-edge technology extends to an array of safety and driver-assist tools that optimize your focus, extend your visibility, and actively minimize the potential for collision. Known as the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite, these tools include Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking that constantly monitors the road ahead for potential collisions and can bring the Mustang to a controlled stop if a collision is imminent. The Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert keeps an eye on your blind spots, while the Lane-Keeping System helps you keep the Mustang safely centered in its lane. Other tools include automatic high-beam headlamps, a rear-view camera, and adaptive cruise control, the latter of which makes cruising at highway speeds a breeze.
